WYOMING DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD
The Wyoming Department of Health, Institutional Review Board (WDH IRB) is charged to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of the Wyoming Department of Health. Research which involves the participation of human subjects requires approval or exemption from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the initiation of the project.
The Protection of Human Subjects Act, 45 CFR, outlines requirements for decisions of Institutional Review Boards, addressing issues of informed consent and protections for all research involving human subjects and specifies additional measures of protection for particular classes of subjects, such as prisoners, children and pregnant women. The Code of Federal Regulations defines research as "a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge."
Reformed in January 2003, the WDH IRB is registered with Health & Human Services-Office of Human Research Protection, and has obtained Federal Wide Assurance – which allows for federally funded research to be done at the WDH.
