Cancer Celebration of Hope Planned for Cheyenne

Interested residents are invited to participate in the Wyoming Comprehensive Cancer Control Consortium’s (WCCCC) 9th Annual Celebration of Hope on February 27 at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne.

During the event, cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, healthcare providers and others involved with cancer-related efforts will gather to celebrate hope, progress and Wyoming cancer survivors.

“This year’s celebration will focus on blood cancers and young adult cancer survivors,” said Jessica Perez, WCCCC outreach specialist with the Wyoming Department of Health.

Perez noted there were 200 cases of blood cancer diagnosed in Wyoming and 101 deaths in 2011, with blood cancer incidence rates high among the young adult population.

Known as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, blood cancers affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system. “These cancers are related because each likely result from acquired changes to the DNA of a single stem cell,” Perez said.
