ENTERIC SEROGROUPING
Escherichia coli - Shiga-toxin producing
Salmonella
Shigella
Shigatoxin (STX) producing E. coli infections are also a Wyoming Department of Health Reportable Disease. Laboratories that isolate STX positive E. coli from a patient are required to send the isolate to WPHL. STX positive E. coli isolates are then serotyped. Additionally, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) is performed on the isolate to determine if the patient is a part of an outbreak or a sporadic case.

WPHL maintains sera for the most common STX positive E. coli serotypes (O26, O45, O103, O104, O111, O121, and O157. All other isolates are sent to CDC Atlanta for further characterization. |

Shigella Serogrouping
Shigellosis is a Wyoming Department of Health Reportable Disease. Laboratories that isolate Shigella from a patient are required to send the isolate to WPHL. Shigella isolates are then serotyped into Groups A, B, C, or D. Additionally, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) is performed on the isolate to determine if the patient is a part of an outbreak or a sporadic case.
